What Exactly are Tapas?

Traditional American restaurants are known for their out of control portions. Typically, when you enter a restaurant, you see a menu full of appetizers, entrees, sides, and desserts. But what if you’re in the mood for a little bit of everything, but you don’t want to order a dozen different entrees? Enter tapas. Tapas, or small plates, are thought to originate in Spain and are smaller portions of food meant to be shared around the table. Here at Stella Blu, our fine dining brings the tapas lifestyle across various types of cuisine, so we have a little something for everyone.

A Little History

Like we said above, tapas are thought to originate in Spain several hundred years ago. But what we didn’t tell you is why they came to be. It can’t be confirmed, but barkeeps often served alcoholic beverages with a piece of bread topped with meat and cheese on top of the glass to keep insects and dirt out of the drink. This kept the drinks clean, but also offset the effects of alcohol, allowing patrons to drink more. These days, tapas are found in fine dining restaurants and bars across the world and can be as simple as a few ingredients, or as complex as you can imagine.

Fun fact, in the Basque region of Spain, in San Sebastian, tapas are called “pintxos” (pronounced “pinchos”), and they even have a day each week where you can get a plate and a beer for only two euros!
